I didn’t realize vampires were making a comeback after the Twilight fiasco, but Ryan Murphy seems to think vampires are a better idea than zombies. To add to the count--or countess. Oh the puns--we now have the cocaine-using model named Tristan, the Countess’ lover Donovan (Matt Bomber), and all of the terrifying children. Alongside the vampires, there are the undead: people who seem to be lost in a purgatory state within the Hotel Cortez. This comprises of the train-wreck that is Sally (Sarah Paulson), the terrifyingly tidy Miss Evers, and the grossly mustachioed James March (Evan Peters). I sense this is a nod to the first American Horror Story season, Murder House, where the undead haunt the premises. Or, in Sally’s case, scare the crap out of young girls by grinding her teeth to a pulp.I’ll quickly highlight the important points of the episode:
-
We finally get the origins of the Hotel Cortez!
After having a bit of a drunken heart-to-heart, Iris (Kathy Bates) tells Detective Lowe the truth about the Hotel Cortez. She describes how James March built it to be a murder hotel--or murder house, hint hint--and he killed a whole bunch of people in the prime of his life (I suspect he’s in the prime of his afterlife at the moment). He even seals a woman into the walls of his hotel while she’s still alive. Talk about creativity!
-
The murderer Detective Lowe is investigating takes on a new M.O.
With the gruesome murder of two infidels “doing it”, Detective Lowe starts picking up a pattern: this murder, tied with ones from the 1930s--conveniently when the Hotel Cortez was being built--all reflect one of the Ten Commandments. This explains why there are flashes of the Ten Commandments in the opening credits, though they blip by so quickly that one cannot truly read them. This vigilante murderer may not be so convinced in the Lord as one may think…

Scarlet finds her brother Holden, and he tries to neck her
It’s been years since Scarlet has seen her brother, and she seems to be thrilled to find his live body in a glass coffin. Who wouldn’t be? However, when she goes to visit him and tries to take a selfie, he swoops on in and tries to make moves. A little creepy coming from the unaging little brother, but what can you do? He’s young, he’s a vampire, he has needs.

The Countess has found a hotter version of Donovan, and this one likes cocaine
After attending a fashion show in her own lobby, the Countess meets a male model who seems to be her type: brunette, unquestionably attractive, and a drug addict. She turns him into a vampire, teaches him the ropes, and even lets him bring home his first Grindr date for them to munch on. Donovan gets kicked to the curb, and he is not a happy camper.
As for our other favorite drug-addict, Schmidty, he seems to be a bit tied up--in a mattress. Sally seals him in nice and tight, and they share a nice tender moment before she scolds him for trying to cheat death. This episode left me to my own imagination; all 100 minutes of the show, I was making predictions. I have a good feeling that the Countess was once married to James March, and she was the one who turned him into the authorities. I also believe that James March inspired the Ten Commandment killings, for he himself said to one of his prey that he “must kill God.” James March was also responsible for the Bible and Bodies scene that Detective Lowe compares the recent killings to. Donovan is going to come back with guns blazing, and I would assume Iris will intervene on her son’s behalf. Holden is still going to run around like the child-vampire he is, and Lowe will be as clueless as ever.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text][/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row]
