Here’s What You’re Doing this Weekend: An Exhaustive Guide to the Most Madison Activities Around

It’s getting to be that time of year again: Spring semester is plodding through its half-way point and the days are slowly getting longer, but Madison has lost somewhat of its luster. Saturdays at Camp Randall are a distant memory, it’s still too cold to spend an afternoon at the Memorial Union Terrace, and the Farmer’s Market around the Capitol seems like it’s years away. What are college students and visitors to campus to do? Luckily for you, I’ve compiled a list of everything to do for a long weekend in Madison.

  • Thursday Night: Start out your weekend with a few twirls at Late Night Skate at the Shell! For only $7, you can shuffle along the ice with your friends to the tune of whatever music fits their theme night.

  • Friday Night: Stop by Ian’s Pizza for some mac ‘n’ cheese pizza before heading over to Union South to catch one of the free movies they’re showing. Make sure to get there early so you can snatch up the prime seats! I really do think WUD Film is one of the best-kept secrets of Madison: so far this semester, they’ve shown Oscar nominees I, Tonya, Ladybird, The Shape of Water, and The Post, along with some family-friendly cartoons and a good horror flick or two. Up next: Blockers and The Florida Project.

  • Saturday Morning: Window shop at Hilldale mall--the stores are as cute as they are expensive, and let’s be honest, none of us college students can afford anything they sell there--and stop by Bowl of Heaven for a heaping acai bowl.

  • Saturday Afternoon: Chat with friends at one of the big wooden tables in front of one of the cozy fireplaces in Memorial Union’s Der Rathskeller. Help yourself to some Babcock Ice Cream if you’re hungry.

  • Saturday Night: Take a stroll down State Street to grab some tacos from BelAir for dinner. See a Broadway show at the Overture Center if you managed to score tickets early enough. (Les Misérables and Waitress are coming soon!)

  • Sunday: Bask in the joy of everything your weekend in Madison has offered you! You’ll probably want to take a long nap after how busy you’ve been, and you deserve it.

One of the best things about living in Madison is how much there is to do around the city, whether you’re a sports fan or a Broadway enthusiast. Get out of your comfort zone next weekend and try something new! You can’t go wrong.
