Tuvalu: Coffeehouse and Gallery

Photography by Calder SellWritten by Evanka Annyapu Driving to Tuvalu was a whole experience in and of itself than having a drink at their cafe. The straight route down the heart of Verona, on North Main Street, was a pleasant drive for the start of spring break. With the windows rolled down, a touch of coffee sprinkled somewhere in the air, and the sun creating a fuzzy, warm vibe, Verona was the place to be. While passing the schools of Verona, a tempting turn towards Culver’s, and a local grocery store, Tuvalu simply looked like another home down the friendly neighborhood main street. Looking more closely, you see a sign, Tuvalu Coffeehouse and Gallery, right in between which bundles of flowers in a few more weeks would frame. Once you enter the cafe, your eyes immediately land to your right where shelves of colorful objects are displayed. From necklaces, to pottery, to photographs, you would think you’re at Serrv on State Street. Then, as you get closer to the artwork for sale, you realize that all of them are eco-friendly or in some way sending profits to eco-friendly organizations. You step away to examine more of this vividly, colorful cafe to the walls that are decorated with artwork of local artists; photographs that create letters and then put together, create words. In some metaphorical way, it brought everything unorganized in your life together with a simple, homely touch. Moreover, it was in the way that the baristas would offer a second chance at a drink that you want to try. If you don’t like it, bring it back and we can fix it up the way you like it! And that would easily make you plop a seat in their gently furnished lounge space with muted pastel, corduroy couches. More than being family-owned, locally loved, 100% fair trade, and encouraging environmental care, it’s all defined in its own name! The culture of Tuvalu is largely unique to the South Pacific Islands between Hawaii and Australia. According to Jasons, Tuvaluan culture places a generous emphasis on traditional ways, friendliness, and a relaxed lifestyle, everything you can expect to feel right in Tuvalu’s in Verona! Enjoy a meal from their all-day breakfast menu, or a fresh salad, soup, or wrap, with a drink off of their neon-colored board to be a part of the delightful vibe that Tuvalu brings to Madison. Located on 300 S. Main Street, open 6:30am-5pm Monday through Saturday & 7:30am-5pm Sunday (they have free wifi, too!)
