University Theatre: What to See

Written by Zhiyun ZhaoPhotography by Tori TisoSeeing or participating in University Theatre productions is one of best memories I had at UW-Madison. As a graduating senior, I'm definitely going to miss the evenings I spent at the Hemsley Theatre and Mitchell Theatre. So, for those of you who are not graduating this semester, here's a brief overview of the fantastic shows that are coming to University Theatre soon.University Theatre's production of The 39 Steps runs from April 25th to April 28th at Mitchell Theatre. Adapted from the 1915 John Buchan novel and the 1935 Alfred Hitchcock film, the play version of The 39 Steps is a parody of the film and has four actors playing multiple roles. Its 2008 Roundabout Broadway production was nominated for multiple awards, and won two Tony Awards. University Theatre's production will also be played by four actors, with two Foley artists who create sound effects. If you are looking for a hilarious show before finals or want to enjoy the magic of theatre, The 39 Steps is a play you won't want to miss this semester.University Theatre will begin its 2019-2020 season with Evil Dead the Musical, a rock musical that is based on a horror film series. Be sure to catch this hilarious show at the end of your summer break or at the beginning of the fall semester! Pulitzer Prize-winning and Tony Award-winning play Clybourne Park will then run from November 14th-24th at Mitchell Theatre. The play centers on issues like race and housing. After the winter break, Shakespeare's Julius Caesar will be performed in Mitchell Theatre, and the University Theatre is aiming to have a diverse cast to tell the ancient story that is still relatable to today's audience. Sarah DeLappe's The Wolves will be the last show of the 2019-2020 season. This play is a Pulitzer Prize finalist, and is about the experiences of the teenage girls on a soccer team. If you are interested in acting in Julius Caesar or The Wolves, more information about the auditions can be found on theatre.wisc.edu.
