While the longest government shutdown in history continues, hate speech is on a rampage, and winter storms sweep the nation, we could all use some good news in our life. Though news of unpaid federal employees and destroyed national parks dominate the news, Saturday Night Live used the government shutdown as the basis for their hilarious skit on January 19th. Alec Baldwin as Donald Trump played “Deal or No Deal” in order to solve the crisis, and Pete Davidson returned after his month hiatus following a suicidal note posted on Instagram. Other things to look forward to in 2019 include a sequel to the book The Handmaid’s Tale. Taking place fifteen years after the events of the first book, Margaret Atwood’s The Testaments will be in print sometime this year. Keeping up with pop culture and the royal family, the recently wed Prince Harry and Meghan Markle are expecting a baby this spring. They announced the pregnancy in October 2018.The movie “On the Basis of Sex,” a biopic of Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg, recently came out in theaters. Starring Felicity Jones, the movie also features music by Kesha, more recently known for her songs about women empowerment. A documentary titled “RGB” also explores Ginsburg’s early life and the impact she has had on gender equality. Receiving a 95% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, the documentary is available for viewing on Hulu and Amazon Prime Video. Furthermore, 2019 anticipates the development of self-driving cars. General Motors intends to launch a commercial self-driving ride service.Additionally, if one New Year wasn’t enough or you already need a fresh start from 2019 after this month, the Chinese New Year is on February 5th. You can celebrate the new year again, and maybe forget that this past January ever happened.
